After a successful debut at Bristol Old Vic, Coin Toss Collective are bringing their show FREAK OUT! to VAULT Festival, 18th-19th March, Network Theatre, Waterloo, London. It is a play about coastal erosion, community and what home means to us. We’re lucky enough to be hosting Coin Toss Collective for an open dress run at Bedford House.

Coin Toss Collective are an emerging company of nine joyfully chaotic theatre-makers formed in 2021 through Made in Bristol, a year-long theatre-making residency at the historic Bristol Old Vic theatre. They ‘coined’ their name in a fluke moment, when one of their members suggested that they decide by tossing a coin. They thought this reflected their collaborative, non-hierarchical approach to devising theatre - playful, endlessly curious, unconventional, and open to serendipitous moments that often take their work into unexpected territory.

So group-work is the overall aim, which is a lot of fun!

In a 4-hour workshop, students will:

10 am – 12 am:  Study the human form with a clothed model in the studio – drawings in pencil and charcoal will be made individually. By lunchtime, students will have a series of sketches of the figure in action.

12pm – 12.30pm: Lunch – students may bring their own packed lunch to eat in the kitchen area where tea and coffee can be purchased.

12.30 – 1.30pm: Together, students will create a frieze which will have comment elements across the whole frieze, such as: tables, chairs, bunting, trees. Each student will add their own figures to the composition from images made in the morning or from collected images.

This work may be on sheets of paper which can be joined together or it may be on one long piece of paper.  Drawings will be initially in charcoal or pencil, but later acrylic paint may be used to build the work up to a finish.

Resources: Students will bring their own sketchbooks and pencils for the morning session as well as their own brushes and acrylics for the afternoon session. Charcoal to be supplied by BH.   Acrylic paint supplied by students taking part and also by AB/BH.

Pippa’s practice primarily involves making kiln formed glass pieces and ceramic objects. Alongside fine art Pippa’s background includes education and community which fuels her interest in how objects can both enhance communication and enrich emotional life.

The theme of emotions is a constant and significant underpinning to her work in which ideas interact between form and surface. Many exciting opportunities are afforded when working with glass and ceramics. Pippa loves to move between whimsy and serious – abstracting lines, shapes or colour. By integrating drawing and colour, mark making and form, she shares her search for resolutions.
