General FAQs:
What is the course about?
The course provides instruction in many of the facets of art: starting with drawing in pencils, charcoal and pastels (both chalk and oil), before moving into acrylics and watercolours. Oil paints may be used if requested. We’ll look at proportions, colour-mixing and the colour wheel, and differing painting techniques such as palette knives and the use of glazes. The course is for mixed abilities from beginners to the more experienced.
What will I learn?
Essential drawing skills such as understanding tonal values and proportions will be taught. Painting skills such as understanding colour and colour-mixing are examined. The subject matter will vary from simple still-life through to landscape and portraiture. Other approaches such as pen and ink and collage may be explored.
How will the course be taught
We will work from real life if possible and photographs/reference when necessary. There will be plenty of guidance, tips and demonstrations along the way. Examples from the world of art will be looked at and discussion encouraged. As the course progresses themes may be suggested that you can approach in any medium you prefer.
Will I need to buy any materials before I start?
Please bring 2B & 4B pencils, a putty rubber, a good quality A3 cartridge paper pad to the first class. Later, differing materials such as charcoal, pastels, acrylics and watercolours will be needed, with the tutor happy to provide advice on these.
