General FAQs:

What will I need to bring?

It is not necessary to buy all types of paint at the beginning, though it would be useful to bring either watercolour or acrylic paints of student quality. Watercolour can be in the form of tubes or pans. A small box is quite sufficient and should include either a Chinese watercolour white or a gouache white. If acrylic, then red, yellow, blue and white would be a minimum requirement. When we try out oil painting, some colour shades will be available for you to experiment with. If you enjoy this medium it is possible to buy a water-soluble version of oil paint, which is much less toxic to use.

Further paint purchases can be made once you are aware of your requirements.

Other equipment needed:

- Brushes: For watercolour, a large flat brush for washes and 2 brushes say sizes 4 and 8; for acrylic or oil the cheapest hogs hair brushes. After experimenting, you will discover which are your preferred brush sizes.

- Paper: A pad of good quality watercolour paper A3 size (minimum weight 140lb), a pad of acrylic paper which is also suitable for oils, and a pad of cartridge paper for drawing.

- Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B and 6B), rubber, ruler, and masking tape.

- Palette ( for watercolour), plastic plate (for acrylic and oil) for mixing paint.

- Kitchen towel or paint-wiping clothes.

- Plus a folder and box to store your materials.

Drawing & Painting

with Anne Daniels

This class offers an opportunity to draw and paint for all experience levels.

If you have no previous experience, come and have a go! If you have drawn and painted before, then come and enjoy making art and experiment with a variety of techniques. In the first term, we try out watercolour, acrylic and oil paint to give familiarity with their characteristics. In later terms students choose their own preferred paint medium. Throughout the year the class attempts a wide range of weekly tasks aimed to stimulate and develop artistic skills.

About the Tutor:

Anne studied art as a second career, having been denied the opportunity at school, and enjoyed the challenge of acquiring visual skills, starting with local art classes then through all available university courses in Fine Art and Printmaking (from BA to Prof.Doc.). She began teaching at Bedford House as professional practice for her Professional Doctorate and discovered her enthusiasm for teaching art.
