NEW ONLINE COURSES! Yoga & Art Appreciation (20/01/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

Following the success of Bedford House Online’s first week, you’ll be pleased to hear we have added more classes to the online programme!

The already established and very popular Art Appreciation course run by Ron Clark has joined the schedule.
We also have a brand new 60-minute yoga class and a twice weekly 30-minute Stretch & De-stress ‘after work’ class run by Gemma Westall, helping you relax and regain posture. We now spend more time than ever sitting and often have stressful lives. The post work sessions will accommodate most workwear, so no need to change. More details in the Course Programme.

Art Appreciation – Ron Clark – Thursdays @ 10:30 – 12:00 – £45 – 5/10 weeks – via Zoom and Email
The course consists of 5 x 1 weekly handout for self-study on the term’s topic (21 Jan to 25 Feb). This is followed by 5 x 1 weekly talk delivered on Zoom by Ron (25 Feb to 25 March). This term’s lectures are based on the lives and major works of five great European artists: Titian (c.1487–1576), Diego Velázquez (1599–1660, Johannes Vermeer (1632–75), Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) and Pablo Picasso (1881–1973).

Yoga – Gemma Westall – Mondays @ 11:00 – 12:00 – £79 – 9 weeks starting 25th January – via Zoom
A Vinyasa based yoga flow for all abilities.  Each weekly session focuses around a different element – Earth, Water, Fire and Air – to allow for a varied experience for mind, body and soul.

Stretch & De-stress ‘After Work’ – Gemma Westall – Tuesdays & Thursdays @ 18:30 – 19:00 – 9 weeks starting 26th January – via Zoom.
£79 – 18 sessions 2 weekly; or £45 – 9 sessions 1 weekly.

Take 30 mins at the end of your ‘working day’ to reconnect with your body and clear your mind. Helping to differentiate between work and relaxation hours whilst working from home, these gentle stretches and twists can be done in your everyday clothing.

Task-based Courses in 'Drawing, Painting, Pastels' and 'Printmaking' with Anne Daniels (13/01/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

If you are one of our wonderful artists (or maybe just fancy trying something new), you’ll be glad to hear of a new update to our Friday art classes with Anne Daniels.

We are launching a task-based course (only email and WhatsApp required), similar to the course Anne has delivered in the past.  We are pleased to offer this new course at £69, as this course is shorter in time than the face to face courses, though still 11 sessions starting this Friday.

Anne will set a weekly task and send this via email midweek prior to the Friday class. The students can then share their artwork on Friday via a WhatsApp group, where all students can view the images and start a discussion. Feedback is provided by Anne for each artwork.
Class details:

Fri @ 10am – 11am : Discover Drawing and Painting – £69 for the term.

  • Using both traditional techniques and new ideas, in this class we explore a wide range of art topics and experiment with a range of media, including watercolour, acrylic and oil paints. Suitable for all levels and encourages both beginners and the more advanced.
  • The emphasis this term will be split between figure drawing, where we will be recapping the component skills of seeing edges, spaces, relationships, light and dark etc.; and also, on the art made by the Surrealists, exploring the methods of several artists such as Magritte, Dali, and Chagall.

Fri @ 2pm – 3pm : Printmaking – £69 for the term.

  • Prints can be taken from very many surfaces using both simple and sophisticated techniques. And a press though useful is not essential. So, armed with a few tools at home, making hand rubbed prints can be an exciting visual experience.
  • The tasks that can be undertaken most successfully at home will be based on monoprinting and relief printing with wood or lino.

For more information please follow the link below. To book, please email us at enquiries@bedfordhouse.org.uk.

Bedford House January Classes (2/01/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

Happy New Year.  I hope you have had a good Christmas.

I am writing with an update on the impact of Tier 4 Covid Restrictions and the Covid related situation in Essex and adjacent London boroughs.  BHCA is located within a Tier 4 area.

Tier 4 restrictions mean that organised physical activities cannot take place indoors or outdoors.  As a consequence, BHCA’s physical activity courses will not run until government reviews and eases restrictions.  Tier 4 restrictions may well last until the end of January 2021

The Trustees have considered the severity of the Covid situation and pressures on the NHS in Essex and adjacent London Boroughs.  Having also taken into consideration that many schools are remaining closed for the first couple of weeks or have staggered starting dates, the Trustees have decided to defer the start of Term 2 until Monday 18 January 2021 for academic courses.  As a consequence, BHCA’s classroom based activities including the Pottery will re-start Term 2 on Monday 18 January.

Credits will be issued for classes not running during the above described closure periods.  Credits can be used against Term 2 and 3 courses.
We will keep you informed should anything change.

Best wishes,
Lykke Leszczynski, Centre Manager

Introducing Gill, Christmas Break Dates and Last Chance to Enrol (13/12/20)

Dear Members and Friends,
I would like to introduce you to the latest member of the Administration Team, Gill.
Gill joined us at the beginning of December as an Admin Volunteer a couple of mornings a week and has already been a great help supporting the enrolment processes for Term 2. Here’s a message from Gill:
“Hi everyone, I’m Gill and have just joined the office at Bedford House as an admin volunteer. A little about me; my background is in education – I have been a deputy / acting headteacher of 3 Primary schools. Officially, I’m semi-retired at present and am still involved in some part-time teaching. I also volunteer at a local food bank and try hard to keep up with my main form of exercise – walking!
I look forward to meeting you all.”

In other news, Bedford House will be closed over the Christmas break from 19th December – 3rd January. So with this in mind if you haven’t yet enrolled for Term 2, this coming week will be your last chance to do so before Christmas and to secure a space on your preferred course. It will also be your last chance to buy our beautiful handmade Christmas and Greeting cards. All only £1! (See links below.) You can pay both by card in person or over the telephone.

If you have already enrolled, we look forward to seeing you in the New Year when classes generally start back up during the week commencing the 4th January.

Remember you can also keep in touch via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give us a call on 0208 504 6668 or email Caroline on Enquiries@bedfordhouse.org.uk .

Best wishes,
Lykke Leszczynski, Centre Manager

Back to Normal! Well nearly … Latest update on BHCA courses & government restrictions (3/12/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

Further details were issued in the last few days by the government in relation to charities running physical activities indoors. The trustees met yesterday (Friday) and agreed that BHCA activities are compliant with the new regulations, subject to all members adhering to the tighter restrictions which now include no socializing before and after classes taking place.  All other requirements remain unchanged such as maintaining distancing at 2 metres as far as possible, facemasks are required unless a person is exempt, and sanitizing regularly.

To confirm, all indoor exercise classes are now going ahead. Thank you for your patience during this difficult time.

We count on members to adhere to the new requirements of no pre/post socializing, distancing, wearing face coverings and sanitizing, and look forward to seeing you back in classes from Monday 7 December 2020.

Where possible we will organise an additional week of courses but please checks with your course tutor in this coming week.

  • Normal end of term 1:  Saturday 12 December.
  • Extended end of term 1:  Friday 18 December (check with your tutor)
  • Term 2 start:  Week commencing 4 January 2021 (exceptions are Art Appreciation and Glass Fusing Courses).

If you have any questions, please give the Administration Team a call on 020 8504 6668 or email Caroline on Enquiries@bedfordhouse.org.uk .

PS. Please remember to enrol on Term 2 courses asap if you wish to secure a space and avoid disappointment as the spaces are filling up and some of our courses are already full. Priority booking for existing students ended on 2 December.

Best wishes,

Lykke Leszczynski, Centre Manager

Impact of latest COVID restrictions from 2 December 2020 (1/12/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

We have now digested the latest information from the government regarding the new restrictions from Wednesday 2 December 2020 and interpret the restrictions as below.

Bedford House activities fall under several different restrictions so please look out for the ones relevant to your course/s as below:

Academic, Classroom-based Activities (such as art and craft courses, including Pottery-based)
These courses continue to run as planned with no changes for students.

Physical Activity – Outdoors (such as guided walks in the forest)
Outdoor activities will run as usual with no changes for students.

Physical Activity – Indoors (such as yoga, Pilates, line dancing, keep fit, aerobics)
Indoor physical activities in groups cannot run under the current restrictions.  Government says they will review restrictions every 2 weeks for the next few months.

NEW TEMPORARY COURSES – Piloting new ways of exercising during December.
We are launching new concepts of outdoor exercise to see us through this period:
Guided Yoga Walks, Guided Mindful Walking, possibly Pilates Walks.
Our yoga tutors are offering Guided Yoga Walks and a Guided Mindful Walking mainly at the same time as your usual course would start, setting off from and returning to Bedford House carpark.  The sessions may be closer to 60 minutes than to 90 minutes depending on the destination.
The Yoga Walks will provide relaxed walking, breathing exercises, some stretching, and Susie will also provide mindfulness exercises.  See below for more info regarding the Mindfulness Walk.  More details to follow regarding the Pilates walks.

“Guided Mindful Walking with Susie Holland
We come together to use our senses to guide us through a mindful walk led by Susie. During the walk we can challenge ourselves to stay present as much as possible and to ground ourselves in the nature surrounding us. We will be exploring breathwork (pranayama) as well as mindfulness and different grounding techniques.
Please bring suitable footwear and wrap up warm! “

Introducing Micheline (23/11/20)

Dear Members and Friends

I am pleased to introduce you to Micheline who joined the Administration Team as ‘Administrative Assistant – Social Media’, at the beginning of November.  She has completed her induction programme and has already settled into our routines and culture.  One of Micheline’s many tasks is to process and pack the orders from our Virtual Card Shop on our website (link at bottom of this email) so you may get to know her in that context.  If you are interested in getting to know Micheline, she has written a short biography, see below.

With Micheline’s arrival we are able to keep the Administration Office open during all our hours of activity which means that during ‘normal’ times we are able to respond to your queries in-person and by telephone 12 hours a day Monday to Friday, and up to 8 hours on Saturdays.

Administration Office Staff
Caroline:      Administrator – Membership, Enrolment, Space Hire
Ian:              Administrator – Courses (post-enrolment)
Micheline:    Administrative Assistant – Social Media
Dave:           Finance Officer
Lykke:          Centre Manager
David:          Caretaker

Micheline writes:
“Hi everyone, I’m Micheline (pronounced Mik-a-lean) and will be working on the social media at Bedford House. A little bit about me; I studied film production at university so naturally love watching film and TV in my spare time. After university I worked as a centre support assistant in a serviced office company before going travelling. After travelling I started work as an admin assistant in a busy media agency in the city but this was cut short due to coronavirus. Outside of work, I love walking my dog in Epping Forest, socialising with friends and Ballroom & Latin dancing which I have done for over 10 years.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all.
Micheline”

We look forward to hearing from you.

Launching the Virtual Card Shop and BHCA News webpages (16/11/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

I am delighted to bring you some exciting developments!

We are launching a Bedford House Virtual Card Shop with handmade greeting cards made by the Bedford House Printmakers.  Every year the Printmakers sell their cards at the Craft Fairs to raise funds to support Bedford House but this year it is not possible to hold our usual Christmas Craft Fair.  There is a choice of handmade cards available for all seasons and occasions.  Read more about it on the Card webpage and how to place orders.  Collection & Delivery Options available. http://www.bedfordhouse.org.uk/wp1/printmaking-class-cards/

With Government-imposed restrictions changing often and with short notice it is difficult for the Administration Office to ensure all members are reached in time.  BHCA has hundreds of members and all Administration office staff work part time.  So, in addition to the MailChimp emails (with the light blue background) we have set up a new webpage where all BHCA News messages are uploaded as they become available.  Visit the BHCA News webpage http://www.bedfordhouse.org.uk/wp1/bhca-news-for-members-friends/ for the latest news.

MailChimp e-mailings (with the light blue background) were introduced in the Spring 2020 and have been highly successful according to feedback.  We are currently working on making improvements to their reach.  In the meantime, we are setting up a temporary parallel solution.  If you are aware of anyone who would benefit from the temporary alternative solution then please email the request to the Centre Manager on Office@bedfordhouse.org.uk .

Lastly, our Seasonal Craft Workshops still have some spaces.  We are planning to reschedule the Willow Weaving workshop in December, date to be confirmed.  Please see the full programme on our website http://www.bedfordhouse.org.uk/wp1/workshops-and-events/

With regard to our normal courses please see our message to Members & Friends dated 4 November 2020 on BHCA News webpage http://www.bedfordhouse.org.uk/wp1/bhca-news-for-members-friends/.  Scroll down until you find the message.

Best wishes,
Lykke Leszczynski, Centre Manager

We will be extending the term by one week for the cancelled activities so that term one will now end on Friday 18 December for these activities.

Parliament is in the course of approving the restrictions today and we will notify you if there are any changes affecting the above .

We will keep in touch regularly during the lockdown with more updates.
Stay safe.

Autumn Term starting today – still time to register! (25/9/20)

Dear Members and Friends,
Welcome to the new academic year 2020/21.

Thank you for the overwhelming enrolment and positive responses we have received since we opened for enrolments for the Autumn Term. One month on and we are pleased to say that we have processed a similar number of applications to other years. Normally enrolment is processed over 3-4 months but this year we have managed in just one month. Thank you for bearing with the longer than usual time it may take to get responses from the Administration Office during this period.

Some of our classes, yoga classes in particular, are so popular that they sold out in the first 10 days. We have therefore organised a new class to start next week. Enrol now to avoid disappointment!

NEW YOGA

T1-20/21-019 Gentle Yoga with Susie Holland on Fridays 9:30 – 11:00 Starting Friday 18 September. 12 sessions of 1.5 hours: £108.

A 90-minute class combining gentle yoga postures with mindfulness to release stress and tension from the body. All levels are welcome to this class and no prior experience is necessary. To Book: Call 020 8504 6668 or visit www.bedfordhouse.org.uk .

A couple of courses are not running from the beginning of term due to low enrolment by the time we had to make a decision to run or not (remember to enrol early if you want a course to run). We have been in contact with those few who had enrolled to discuss alternatives. We may try to relaunch these courses later in the year if we have adequate interest.

Thank you for your support regarding local parking. BHCA is awaiting details from the council and until these have been received, we are unable to develop fair and practical guidelines regarding potential permit parking. In the meantime, I am pleased to say that we are working on creating a couple of additional parking places on site by reorganising the downhill side of the onsite carpark. The space has been cleared and will be marked up for parking as soon as we can. Adjacent streets will have new restrictions soon, allegedly from 1st October 2020. The only concrete details we have received are concerning these two streets: Amberley Road will become Permit Parking Area Monday to Friday 11:00 to 14:00. Scotland Road will become Permit Parking Area Monday to Friday 11:00 to 16:00. I will circulate more information regarding parking to Members and Friends when it is available. I am unable to communicate with individual members regarding parking at this point, not least as there are no details available.

We look forward to seeing you in the new Autumn term.

Best wishes,
Lykke Leszczynski, Centre Manager

Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020! (23/08/20)

Dear Members and Friends

I have great pleasure in launching the Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020.

After a long period of lockdown and despite the difficult year it has been so far, we have found creative ways to overcome hurdles and achieve alternative versions of our main annual activities:

  • The Summer School 2020, with 40+ sessions and 100+ members attending.  A few taster sessions are still available.
  • The Summer Exhibition which is now online as The Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020 with almost 100 art works.  Not quite the event that many have been used to attending, but nevertheless a celebration of creativity and craftsmanship that more people can now benefit from as you can easily share it with your friends and family.
  • The launch of the Courses Programme 2020/21 and subsequent healthy enrolment interest resulting in several courses already having sold out.  You can see the full Courses Programme 2020/21 on the website.

Visit the Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020 here and provide feedback afterwards to the Centre Manager, Lykke, on Office@BedfordHouse.org.uk

See the Courses Programme 2020/21 here and contact the Membership Administrator, Caroline, on Enquiries@BedfordHouse.org.uk if you need more information. Card payments in person or over the telephone on 020 8504 6668 9:00 to 13:00 Monday to Friday.

Explore the Summer School 2020 Taster Sessions here and contact the Office on 020 8504 6668 for last minute enrolment on Watercolours, Art for All, Guided Walks, Creative Writing, and Ballet.  Summer School runs sessions until 4 September.

PS.
If you are an artist learner and you have not yet submitted an artwork for the Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020 you can still submit 1-2 pieces per course attended (including the Summer School) to Lykke, Centre Manager, before 31 August 2020 on Office@BedfordHouse.org.uk .

Enjoy the visit to the Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020.

Best wishes,
Lykke Leszczynski, Centre Manager

Pianist, Virtual Exhibition 2020 and Courses 2020/21 (16/8/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

In this News Update you will find information on the latest developments at Bedford House.

The Summer School 2020 is progressing well with just under 100 course tickets in use. You can still join the Summer School for taster sessions, subject to availability. Please see our website for the enrolment form and course programme www.bedfordhouse.org.uk .

The 2020/21 Courses Programme has been off to a flying start with some courses already sold out. If you are keen to attend a specific course do not delay your enrolment. You will find the membership form, the enrolment form (two separate forms) and the course programme brochure on our website www.bedfordhouse.org.uk . If you are unable to print you can find these forms already printed at Bedford House, in the porch during opening hours, and 24/7 outside the Hall. Pay by card in person or over the telephone or make a BACS transfer. Please see the payment page in the programme for full payment option details.

Outreach Work re Course Enrolment – Where tutors are aware of learners who do not have email or internet access the Administration Office is undertaking outreach work and contacting learners, in addition to the tutors themselves. This is quite time consuming and will take some time to complete. Learners are strongly encouraged to actively contact the office rather than waiting to be contacted, in particular as courses are filling up.

Pianist Vacancy – We are looking for a pianist to accompany the Keep Fit classes on Tuesdays 10:00 to 12:30 (2 classes with a 30-minute break) in St James Hall in Palmerston Road. If you are interested please contact Lykke, Centre Manager on Office@bedfordhouse.org.uk or 020 8504 6668. Start date ideally 8 September 2020.

Virtual Exhibition – The uploading of the Virtual Summer Exhibition has taken a little longer than anticipated. We are now planning to launch by 23 August.

Call to Artists regarding the Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020 – Learners on the 2019/2020 Courses Programme and Summer School 2020 can still submit 1-2 pieces each for inclusion in the Virtual Summer Exhibition 2020 if you haven’t already done so. Please submit to Lykke, Centre Manager on Office@bedfordhouse.org.uk . Please remember to state your name, which course you attended, and the name of the artwork if relevant. We look forward to receiving your artwork.

We are looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
Best wishes,
Lykke Leszczynski, Centre Manager

The BHCA Programme 2020/21 has arrived! (8/8/20)

Dear Members and Friends,

I am pleased to launch the BHCA Course Programme 2020/21 offering our usual mix of health and fitness, art and craft, and other leisure activities.

The brochure itself contains not only courses and payment information but also an Impact Report about Bedford House.  We have kept the membership form and enrolment form separate so that they are easy to find.  Just click on the links and they will take you to the brochure and forms.

You can also download the documents from the website www.bedfordhouse.org.uk any time should you lose these links.

We are not printing the brochure this year due to government advice but if you are unable to print at home and you would like a printout we are happy to print a copy in black and white against a donation.  Please contact the office to arrange collection.  We are unable to post brochures.  Membership and Enrolment forms are available from the links in this email, from our website, and printed copies are available from our porch during opening hours, and 24/7 outside the Hall (subject to availability).  We will replenish copies daily.  Our preferred method of payment is by card.  Please follow instructions in the Payment section in the brochure or give us a ring on 020 8504 6668.

We were delighted to see so many of you returning to Bedford House for the Summer School.  Feedback has been very good and encouraging.

Summer School learners will have had the opportunity to test our Covid-safe environment and all the steps we have taken to create this safe environment.  Your Health and Safety is very important to us, as is meeting standards and being compliant.

We look forward to hearing from you on Enquiries@bedfordhouse.org.uk or on 020 8504 6668.

Reminder - Call to Artists - Submissions now open for BH Virtual Summer Exhibition (18/9/20)

Dear Members

The Virtual Summer Exhibition is scheduled to launch on 1 August 2020.  We need your artwork!
If you have not already submitted 1-2 photos or scans of your artwork or other achievements during the year 2019-20 at Bedford House please submit to Lykke on Office@bedfordhouse.org.uk as soon as possible as we are now only a couple of weeks away from launch date.
A virtual exhibition is a new concept at Bedford House and we are very pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to showcase artwork, despite our new normal.
Even virtual spaces have their limitations and due to cloudspace, person resources, and time restraints in getting this off the ground we have had to limit students to 1-2 images each.
You still have an opportunity to complete or produce a new piece of artwork during the Summer School 2020. See the Summer School Programme on our website www.bedfordhouse.org.uk

Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to receiving and showcasing your artwork and other achievements.

Best wishes

We have also been working very hard to ensure Bedford House is a safe environment.  Some of the main precautions organisations and people can take to control the spread of Covid-19 and other virus are cleaning and social distancing.  We have therefore taken the following steps to enable us to welcome you to Bedford House and to keep you safe:

Cleaning and Hygiene

  1. A stringent cleaning regime by a professional cleaning company several times every day in term time
  2. Hand sanitizer available
  3. Surface sanitizers available to tutors and learners to maintain their own space
  4. Fitting specialist doorstops to minimise touching doors
  5. Various signage displayed throughout the premises to remind us of what to do
  6. All site users to wash hands frequently and effectively
  7. Hourly ventilation and air change in rooms
  8. Soap washing shared tools before and after usage where sharing is unavoidable
  9. Minimising the shared use of all items
  10. Those with breathing hygiene issues (non-Covid-19 related) such as coughing, throat clearing etc. to use face coverings or visors.
  11. Learners and tutors to use face coverings as required where close contact is required, or where people are vulnerable.  Tutors to discuss with learners and each class to agree usage.
  12. Tutors to check with learners at the start of classes if anyone has symptoms.

Social Distancing

  1. We are providing a compliant distance between learners.  Large classes have been split over two classrooms or moved to the Hall.  This means that there will only be 6-7 learners in each classroom plus a tutor.
  2. Learners will be situated in zigzag rather than opposite each other.
  3. Class starting times have been staggered.  Class break times to be staggered.
  4. Health, fitness and wellbeing classes taking place in the hall have been reduced to 10-12 learners maximum.
  5. When possible, we will make use of the garden in a socially distanced way.
  6. Designating items to each learner such as own portion of clay; learners to bring own exercise mats and other similar items.  Tutors will work with each class to minimise the sharing of items.
  7. Learners and tutors are asked to bring their own drinks such as water and hot drinks.  Kitchen facilities must remain closed until government restrictions ease.
  8. All tutors have been consulted about issues specific to their courses.
  9. Tutors are adapting their courses to avoid or minimise sharing, to create workstations that are more fixed than usual, to review circulation in spaces to minimise people crossing paths

All measures will be reviewed on an ongoing basis in relation to government advice and inhouse needs.

Lastly, a big thank you to our Members for all your support, patience and kind donations during this challenging time.  There would be no Bedford House without the Members.
Your Summer School Programme will be emailed to you around 15 July, and the Academic Courses Programme 2020/21 will follow shortly thereafter.

If you have any particular concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We look forward to seeing you all again in August and September.

Best wishes,
Lykke Leszczynski
